The curriculum incorporates forklift operation methods, safety procedures, company policies and forklift maintenance. Topics specific to the worksite, like hazardous conditions or materials, must be included. Following classroom learning, operators are taught how to safely operate and use each kind of forklift on the worksite.

Certification through a third-party vendor usually needs an on-site component along with hands-on practice.

Usually, an employer-provided certification will not transfer from the current employer to the next employer. Receiving a lift truck license through employer-provided training permits the operator to run a lift truck for that particular employer only.

Forklift safety would always be an important aspect of the lift truck license training, even though the particulars of the safety training would be dependent upon the machinery being used. Some safety issues would vary for every industry and employer. Both employer-provided training and third-party providers may have to address additional requirements for safety training in applicable industries, like for example in offshore and marine operations.
